The command
.B timesearch
runs and times the
.B /rdb
commands
.B index
and
.BR search .
Its purpose is to find the fastest fast-access method for a given situation.
Theory often fails when working with access methods;
a sequential search by the select command may prove faster
than one of the fast-access methods when the overhead of building the
index is included in the evaluation.
.PP
.B timesearch
is in directory
.B $RDB/demo
rather than in
.B $RDB/bin
because it is written to test just the tables
.B unixtable
and
.BR unixlist .
Because it is a shell script,
you can edit it to test searching on a big table you are manipulating.
.SH Example
The following command test-runs
.BR timesearch :
.DM
cd $RDB/demo ; timesearch | more
.DE
.PP
.B timesearch
writes to the standard output the outputs of the
.B /rdb
commands
.B index
and
.BR search ,
plus the output of the COHERENT command
.B time
that it uses to time the programs.
