\fBpath [ \fIcommand ... \fB]\fR
.PP
.II "command^find path"
The command
.B path
finds the directory path to a command, if it is in one of the
directories in your shell's
.B PATH
environment variable.
.PP
A path means two things in COHERENT:
.IP \fB1.\fR 0.3i
It means the list of nested directories within which a file is located.
For example, file
.B FOO
may have the path of
.BR /usr/local/src/ ;
this means that FOO
is kept in directory
.BR src ,
which in turn is in directory
.BR local ,
which in turn is in directory
.BR usr ,
which in turn is in directory
.BR / .
.IP \fB2.\fR
It means a list of directories that the shell searches
to find an executable program that matches the command typed in.
Each user has his path stored in the environmental variable
.BR PATH ;
to see your path, type the command:
.DM
echo $PATH
.DE
.PP
.B path
searches the directories named in your
.B PATH
to find the path of
.IR command .
If
.B path
cannot find
.I command
or if
.I command
is not executable, it returns nothing.
.SH Example
If you type:
.DM
path column
.DE
.PP
If this command returns
.DM
/usr/rdb/bin
.DE
.PP
then
.B column
lives in directory:
.BR /usr/rdb/bin .
.PP
Please note that for
.B path
to work, you must insert into your
.B PATH
the directory that holds the
.B /rdb
commands.
