.TH filesize "" "" "/rdb Command" .PC "Return the number of characters in a file" \fBfilesize \fIfile ...\fR .PP .II "table^size" .II "size of table" .II file^size The command .B filesize displays the number of bytes in each .IR file . .II wc .II stat() It is much faster than the COHERENT command .B wc because it uses the system call .B stat() to get the number from the i-node table, rather than counting the bytes in the file. .PP If you ask .B filesize to size only one file, it sends one number to the standard output. This number can be assigned to a shell variable. With more than one .IR file , it produces a table of sizes. .SH Example The following command returns the size of file .BR filesize.1 , which holds the ``raw'' form of what you are reading: .DM filesize filesize.1 .DE .PP This displays one value on the standard output, e.g.: .DM 532 .DE .PP The following command asks for the size of files .B ascii.1 and .BR filesize.1 : .DM filesize ascii.1 filesize.1 .DE .PP This form of the command returns a tabular output, e.g.: .DM Offset Filename -------- -------- 464 ascii.1 532 filesize.1 .DE .SH "See Also" COHERENT Lexicon: .B ls, stat(), wc .R
