.TH splittable "" "" "/rdb Command"
.PC "Divide a table horizontally"
\fBsplittable [\-n] \fItable\fR
.PP
.II "table^split horizontally"
The command
.B splittable
uses the COHERENT command
.B split
to split
.I table
horizontally into several smaller tables, each with its own head line.
.I n
is the number of rows to write into each new table,
not counting the two head lines.
.PP
This command is most useful for report writing
because it can split tables into page-sized chunks.
.PP
Like
.BR split ,
.B splittable
creates file names that end with \fBaa\fR, \fBab\fR, \fBac\fR, and so on.
This give 676 (26 x 26) possible output files.
.SH Example
Here is an example using a very short table, called
.BR inventory :
.DM
Item# Amount Cost Value Description
----- ------ ---- ----- --------------
1 3 50 150 rubber gloves
2 100 5 500 test tubes
3 5 80 400 clamps
4 23 19 437 plates
5 99 24 2376 cleaning cloth
6 89 147 13083 bunsen burners
7 5 175 875 scales
.DE
.PP
The command
.DM
splittable -4 inventory
.DE
.PP
splits
.B inventory
into two tables, one with the first four lines of
.B inventory
and the other with the last three.
Each new table also has the same head line as
.BR table .
.PP
The command
.DM
ls inventory*
.DE
.PP
shows us that the current directory now contains files:
.DM
inventory
inventoryaa
inventoryab
.DE
.PP
The two new tables are named, respectively,
.B inventoryaa
and
.BR inventoryab .

COHERENT Lexicon:

.SH Notes
Because a COHERENT file can have no more than 14 characters in its name,
.B splittable
will not work correctly with tables whose names are longer than 12 characters.
